Differences between CPAP and sleep devices

Philips CPAP recall

Philips Respironics issued a recall on their Dreamstation 2 CPAP machines back on June 14th, 2021. The issue was the silicone-based, sound-insulating foam; small particles would potentially enter the airway causing headaches, airway irritation and inflammation, and other respiratory symptoms. The next day, a replacement program was started but was not finalized until a few days later. Symptom complaints were minimal (0.03% of users) and were mainly tied to the use of ozone-cleaning machines. Although the recall was voluntary, Philips strongly recommended discontinuing the use of ozone-cleaning machines.

Even though the issue is mainly due to the interaction between the material in the machine and ozone machines, the Dreamstation 2 was still recalled. There are a number of other CPAP options available, but with all the components needing constant cleaning, who’s to say this can’t happen again with other machines? Instead of going the CPAP route, there are simpler alternatives.

Ease of use

As mentioned before, CPAP machines can become cumbersome when it comes to maintenance and wearing to sleep.

Disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling . . .
Having to readjust throughout the night . . .
A feeling of claustrophobia . . .
Dry mouth . . .

These are only a few common issues CPAP wearers struggle with on a regular basis. Oral Appliances are custom-tailored to your comfort and efficacy, and this is only part of the reason why they have the advantage over CPAP machines.

CPAP shortage

Currently, on top of the CPAP recall, there is also a CPAP shortage predicted to be over by the end of 2022. The shortage happened shortly after Philips issued their CPAP recall. Many were issued replacements by Philips while others turned to different companies to purchase a new machine. However, many companies are not able to meet the demand.

The COVID-19 pandemic and chip shortage have also furthered the inability to supply the demand for new CPAP machines. In light of the situation, some have turned to other alternatives including surgery or playing “the waiting game.”

The alternative doesn’t have to involve surgery or prolonged suffering. The first step would be to schedule a visit with us.

Avoid surgery

Living with sleep apnea is frustrating. For lighter cases where jaw positioning is the culprit of sleep apnea, oral appliances can be the solution. Stronger cases, like deformities, may require further surgical intervention. Surgeries may include a turbinate reduction, polyp removal, or adenoidectomy.
